Op Shop Finds...

I've recently moved house and although my room is really small, I spend a lot of time there and I really love it. I'm working on my terrarium and succulent collections and having fun organising my things the way I like them.

This was an awesome find. Someone has made an old cotton reel into an egg timer. Such strange things to put together but I really like it.

You know when you walk in to an op shop and see something amazing behind the counter and you don't even know if it's for sale? So you ask the lady and she says "Yes." Then you swallow and ask "How much?" And she says...""I dunno. $4?" Sweet.

I got this nice glass container from the same shop. It's Avon. How much? $5. Awesome.

Sometimes the op shop gods are on my side.

New Dress - A well overdue post...

Hello!

Look - it's a proper post!

I have been so busy lately - moving house twice and studio once in the past month has left little time for outfit posts and new things. But - behold! A new dress AND haircut AND lipstick in the one day. Bam.

This dress came from etsy. The fabric has the best floral/polka dot cutout detail and it has a peter pan collar. I'm a sucker for those.

My friend steven cut my hair today - it was long overdue!

The lipstick is actually Nars - the colour is "Pop Life" and it is a good bright matte red.

The necklace was 20 cents at an op shop and it goes with everything I own and the cardigan is from a funny little asian grocery store that was (for some reason) also selling cheap cardigans!

So, there you have it. I'm back - hopefully - to regular blogging. Wish me luck!

The swap meet was awesome! I got an amazing 50's toaster oven (still works) for $5, a beautiful china bluebird for $2 and these awesome dead stock stockings...with Wizard Stretch! ($4)

It was a nice time, I sold some dresses and met some readers (you guys know who you are!) and I think Ben will have another one in the coming months.

Taxi Driver...and the Rancho Deluxe Vintage Swap Meet!

Check out the outfits on these lady taxi drivers! The photo was taken in Detroit in the early 50's and they all look so cute.

I saw this picture on Twitter yesterday and figured I had everything I needed to try a similar style.

So...

Take one cropped sleeve knit...

One pair of high waited 40's trousers and a skinny belt...

And one vintage silk scarf...

Et voila!

I kinda like it...

Also - if you're in Melbourne, come down to the Rancho Deluxe Vintage Swap Meet on Saturday. It runs from 9am-2pm and I'll be there selling vintage dresses - some of which have appeared on this blog.

There's a free BBQ, $50 flash tattoos, heaps of stalls selling vintage and it's not just for girls. Rancho Deluxe is a fully functioning hot rod workshop and there will be plenty of car paraphernalia and other awesome tidbits too.

It's at 34 Budd St Collingwood, just look for the cool cars!

New New Dress...

Hi there!
(apologies in advance for the low quality pics - my camera is on its last legs.)

There have been many exciting and wonderful things since I last posted. Lots of happy customers at the shop, some nice press, good music with great friends and lots of tasty food.

This week I did two fun photoshoots, but I can't say who for yet, so watch this space around September! I had my makeup professionally done - hence the close up eye shot - look how neat the eyeliner is! (I need way more practice.)

This is a new (in the real sense of the word) dress. I am it's FIRST owner, which is a rarity for me. It's from Gorman, whose lovely things I usually covet from afar, but hey, there was a big big sale. It's sleeveless, which will be nice in summer, but it's waaaayy too cold for that now!

Brrrrr!

It's a really nice fabric, with a full circle skirt. I wore it with a black wool cardigan that I found at an op shop and shortened. No one makes nice cropped cardigans anymore! It's easy enough to do - just cut off the waist band and cut a section out of your sweater, then reattach the waistband. Just be careful the buttonholes still line up!

The Lemon Dress...

Here is a dress that arrived in the mail via etsy recently.

It's got a cute peter pan collar, came with it's original belt and is in perfect condition.

Oh - and it's got lemons on it!

The beaded applique is perfect - not a single little seed bead missing. It's one of my new favourites.

It just needs a quick wash and it's ready to go!

Shop Move...

So, on Thursday I was called to a meeting in the GPO, the building my shop is in. Turns out (they say) that I should have not been rented the space in the first place, as it is technically a fire escape/smoke corridor and is breaking a ton of building regulations. I had no choice but to move. Boo.

News is that the shop is still in the GPO for now, until August, but is located on Level 1, just outside lift A.

I have found a cool new location, but it's not confirmed, so watch this space!

Offshore Radio Theatre + Hair Tutorial (of sorts)

Last night we went to the 2nd Offshore Radio Theatre at The Kelvin Club. I did my hair and wore a 60's lace cocktail dress. (And a fur wrap - it was cold!)

Curl your hair in sections towards your face. I did a side part.

Leave for as long as possible and gently unroll the curls.

Comb them with your fingers.

Roll your fringe section and pin. Ta-da.

Army Pants!

Hi there. Do excuse my strange early morning face!

I went to my local op shop and found these...1967 deadstock woollen army pants. For $8. A few minutes on the sewing machine to taper the legs and take in the waist and they fit pretty well. Plus, they're nice and warm for riding my bike to work.

They have cool pleat detailing...

Action shot! You can sort of see my satchel - I should do a post on that too...

I have recently found a nice new lipstick too - MAC's Del Rio. It's a great matte natural "lip" colour and stays well put. Check it out.

Things of Late...

So...

Lately I built a bike. Sick of the trams - only one solution. Find a cheap Malvern Star at Camberwell markets and do the following:

Strip frame of wheels and other bike bits:

Buy paint stripper.

Apply stripper.

Wait.....

Wet sand and strip all remaining paint:

Spray it with metal primer:

Spray it gloss black:

Buy wood, glue and timber stain:

Cut it up, glue it together:

Make a box:

Put it all together (with the help of the lovely guys at Little Mule):

TA DA!!!

Rides like a dream. Brooks saddle and grips, Sturmey Archer 3 speed internal hub gears, and a gloss black paint job by yours truly.

Also, this - a new dress for me, made from 1940's deadstock wool.

My friend Bron organised a show last night. Mesa Cosa and Baptism of Uzi played a set each and we all had a good time.

I wore my "Miami Dress" (that's what the label says, anyway) and did a quick pincurl set. It was all upstaged though - by Lachlan's furry headwear, otherwise known as "The Dainty Hat."

Offshore Radio Theatre...

So, things here have been crazy busy. Sorry for the lack of posts! Last night I went along to the first Offshore Radio Theatre night, held at the amazing Kelvin Club in the city. We arrived to find oak panelled walls, taxidermy pheasants, fruit platters, gin and a spectacular variety of performers. The entire show was broadcast live on the website, so if you can't make it along, you can listen in!

Look what came in the mail yesterday!

It's a brass (?) pin, about an inch wide. I wonder who bought it for his girlfriend, and if he is still alive today?

The internet tells me:

In other news, I went to see The National play at the Palais Theatre on the weekend. It was awesome! I looked like this:

It was the first time I had worn this dress. It's pretty delicate, and made from Chantilly style lace and linen. The buttons are bakelite and rhinestone!

I also quite like the tag..."Grosscraft" - strange name!

It was pretty hot, so I wore my hair up off my face. The band was amazing and we got really good seats, a few rows from the stage.

The theatre was built in 1914 and is the largest in the country. Lots of beautiful art deco architecture...just look at the roof!

New Dress Design...

I had a few spare hours in the studio yesterday and decided to use up this blue knit fabric I've had for a while.
I drafted a simple pattern with raglan style sleeves and a pussy bow neckline. I decided to use two darts either side of the waist to bring it in a bit.

It turned out ok...

I wore it with my great aunt's marcasite brooch.

I went for a drive down the Mornington Penninsula yesterday and found these:

Vintage linen thread, dressmakers pins in a cute tin and some very old ink...Total price: $4.50

And a Canasta card set! $3.00.

Thrifting can be a little hit and miss. I found nothing at all clothes-wise, but these little things made the trip worth it!

Seven Fold Ties and Gift Vouchers...

A lovely chap called Brendan is getting married and asked me to make him some ties. So I did.

They're a 7 fold traditional design, handsewn and made from satin backed crepe.

I made up little calico pouches to carry them in with care instructions typed on my typewriter.

Damn Terran and The Boy Scout Getup...

Last night I went to see Damn Terran launch their new EP. It was rad. Check them out here. On the way there, an old man told me looked like a boy scout. Also rad.

I wore my 30's green wool skirt with a cream shirt and green silk scarf. It needed something else, so I added my Pan Am Junior Flyer pin from the early 50's.

Add some red lips and a pincurl set and it's not quite boy scout, but it made me happy anyway.

Sweet Jelly Roll...

Last night we went to Sweet Jelly Roll, which was oince a monthly club night here in Melbourne. One of my favourite local bands, Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes, had their EP launch at The Spanish Club.

The theme of the night was 60's Spanish Harlem, which is quite obscure! I wore this late 30's black crepe dress and a red rose... I tried! I'll post some event pictures once they're done - everyone looked great. Check out this video from the past events!

I didn't want to be dancing with my bulky camera, so I too a few "before' shots... (you can see my cat!)

Garth wore a vintage 50's 3 peice suit and looked rather sharp.

I'm off to pick up a hire truck to move all my gear into the shop!

1950's Suit...or is it?

I've been super busy with the shop plans and many sewing projects (for me and for friends/customers) but I have finally finished them and I wanted to show you this. Behold! The first suit style that I'll be selling made to measure!

It's a fifties/early sixties style and I think it looks reasonably traditional/historically accurate.

There are pockets for cold hands...

Nice buttons...

And it has a pencil skirt - although it doesn't have to. You could have a different skirt style if you wanted...

And look! The jacket has a cute peplum style flare.

1930's Paper Dolls...

Aussie girls may know about Frankie magazine. For those who don't - check it out, it's lovely. Case in point: These great books they sent me. The Gallery of Tasmania has released a collection of hand painted paper dolls by Joan Pitman. She was born in 1917 and started making paper dolls at the age of 14. She went on to design costumes and sets for various theatre companies in the 1940's and when she died, her family donated her work to the gallery, who have reproduced the dolls in these books. Ace!

It. Is. Done. It was a battle, but I got the wallpaper up in the studio. Sewing patterns are flimsy and delicate at best, but even more so when you're trying to stick them to the wall.

Big News.

I haven't been writing here as much as usual because I've been busy on a secret project. The photos below are the (very) raw start of my own shop! It's a teeny tiny studio space in the GPO in Melbourne city in the stairwell on the second and a half floor. I specialise in vintage clothing alterations, deadstock anything and most importantly, I will offer made to measure coats, suits and dresses from the 30's-50's. I'll be using vintage patterns but tailoring them so that the item fits the customer perfectly. So, stay tuned for more updates...

I'll be ripping up the carpet and laying a nice timber floor...

I love these stairs!

Lots of work to be done! The roof will be black, with vintage glass lightshades hanging down the middle. The walls will be covered in vintage sewing patterns. I'll have my desk and sewing machines and a fitting room and everything! So excited!
This is the building. It was built between 1859 and 1867. It looks the same today.

I'll post progress pictures as I go. Eep!

Hi! I'm in New Zealand. Queenstown, to be more accurate. We flew over here to meet up with Garth's parents for their 30th wedding anniversary. The day before we left, Christchurch (the town we were flying into) was struck by a 7.4 earthquake. Awesome. But, we made it. See? (click to zoom...)

There's a really pretty walk that we do each time we go, along the lake into town.

Queenstown is a total bust when it comes to vintage/thrifting adventures, but I did find this nice skirt for $5 in an op shop in Dunedin.
And my Cheap Monday sunnies arrived in the mail just before we left. Excellent!

For fancy, I packed this dress. The long sleeves make it nice and warm. It's a Berkshire "In Between Size Casual" from the late 50's.

I attempted something different with my hair...
Which I think looked okay.

Some of you may know I work at Captains of Industry. We're a gentlemen's outfitter and we make (among other things) bespoke leather shoes. My boss James makes one pair a week and is teaching me. So, here's my first pair so far...

Plans and patternmaking...

A "fit shoe" is made to check size and pattern...

It is stretched over the last - a wooden foot to shape the leather...

The leather uppers and lining for the real deal...

The edges are thinned down to reduce bulk at the stitch lines...

The heels are sewn first and top edges folded down...

Lining is sewn in...

The buckles is sewn in place...

Topstitching done...

Ready for lasting (stretching over the last)...

I was sent an email by a girl who wanted to buy some curlers (see last post) asking about the hats I posted a week or so ago. So, here they are. They're all from the 50's-60's and are in great condition. I have cleaned and steamed them into shape. I'll post anywhere in the world and am happy to combine postage if you want curlers too!

Peter Pan Collars and Marcasite Brooches...

This dress arrived in the mail yesteday and fits like a glove. It's a light wool, which makes it great for winter. I wore it to work and out to see a friend's band play.

The brooch is marcasite, which is actually iron disulphide. (Ok, I googled it.)Apparently it started to gain use and popularity in England during the 18th century and was used to make lockets, brooches, and cameos, and as a substitute for "cut steel" beads that were popular in Georgian times.

Sorry about the blurry photo. I was in a rush!

Marcasite really gained popularity after the death of Queen Victoria's husband. "Dark and Sombre" was in. Silver and Marcasite jewellery became the fashion for the middle class and continued to the end of the Art Deco Period. This one was made in Germany and was given to my great aunt.

Winter Hair and Rescued Hats...

I've been so busy lately and I need to keep my hair out of my face at work, so I've been experimenting with ways to wear my hair up. This is pretty much my go-to style at the moment...

In other news...HATS!

A friend told me she'd seen a pile of old hats crushed in a suitcase at the op shop. I went to check it out and ended up bringing them all home.

I'm slowly steaming and reshaping them. I'll see which suit me and maybe put the rest up for sale here. They're all felt and from the fifties. Score!

Deadstock Olive Fabric...

I was given this nice fabric recently and decided to make a dress...behold!

It's a combination of the Colette "Sencha" blouse and my own drafted skirt pattern.

With a tie neck collar. And a zip.

And the finished product...I'll post a few more later.

Reshaping Vintage Hats...

I've had some requests on hat care after my last post. Solanah is probably the vintage hat queen, so I'll let her advice (via Queens of Vintage) speak for me!

- "All hats should be stored away from direct sunlight, not to say they should always be in hat boxes, but if there is a wall of shelf facing a window that brings in sunlight, avoid it and choose another location for your hats. Straw hats should be brushed regularly if they are not constantly in use. Take a baby brush (it has soft bristles) and gently brush away any dust collected."

- "All hats stored flat, such as in hat boxes should be stuffed in the crown with acid free tissue paper of unbleached muslin. This will keep its shape between wearing, and prevent any warping or bending that can damage the structure or design.”

- “If you have a misshapen hat, all you need to do is boil some water in a tea kettle until the water steams. Hold the hat a few inches over the spout at the warped spot. Hold for a few seconds then take it away and shape it with your fingers. Make sure not to let felt steam too long or it will shrink.” (I use a steam iron, simply because it makes stram faster and is easy to move around the hat. Either way is fine.)

Amassed Hats...

This is my newest hat - a funny little brown felt style with a black ribbon and netting. I found it crushed under some shoes in a local op shop. There were lots more - a theatre company had closed down and donated a heap of hats, which I promptly purchased. Problem is, felt crushes and gets out of shape easily, so I'm slowly steaming and reshaping them. All these hats necessitate storage...

So my wall now looks like this. I quite like it.

1920's-30's Deadstock Corset For Sale!

I was so excited to find this corset, as it's becoming harder and harder to get deadstock corsets, but alas! It's too big! My loss, your gain. This corset will fit girls with a waist size between 30 and 40 inches.

As you can see, it's in mint condition. The elastic is fine and functional, there are no marks, stains or smells. The steel boning is fine, not popping out the bottom like so many vintage corsets.

I only have one, so to be fair, I have listed it on eBay here. I will post anywhere in the world. Deadstock items in this condition are usually very expensive, so hopefully someone will get a bargain! (Starting price is $35.00 Australian.)

There are 6 suspenders.
The elastic is perfect.
The boning is intact and straight.
There are ten steel "bones."
Original tags!
No marks at all.
Beautiful peach fabric.
Eyelets and laces have no rust or stains.
Suspender clips are perfect.
Original union labels.
Store tags intact!

18 inches at the middle/waist.
21 inches at the hips - this sits just below your bottom.
15.5 inches at the top under your bust.
15 inches long at the back, 16 inches at the front.

Sorry for the extended absence! I have been really busy. Captains got a lovely 3 page spread in Vogue Living, which has made work pretty hectic. And I've been making and doing and generally working hard.

So, The "Fridge" Swap meet was on this morning in Ballarat, a one and a half hour drive from where we live. We got up at 4:30am (cold) and drove to the multi storey concrete carpark where the swap was being held. Nicknamed "The Fridge" for good reason - it was 1 degree celcius when we arrived! I got a sweet old fan and some vintage magazines. (Pictures to come...)

Deadstock 40's Fabric Dress...

I liked the pattern of the last dress I made so much, I thought I'd make another.

This fabric is deadstock 40's wool, which is really nice and warm, yet still drapes nicely and is easy to sew.

I love the patriotic colours in the print, and it matched my hat perfectly!

I got the fabric at Job Warehouse, which is the creepiest fabric place EVER. It's run by two brothers, who are at least 65 years old and hasn't been cleaned in about 50 years. We're talking floor to ceiling shelves of fabric, with the lower layers rotting away to dust. It smells of mould and dank and they make up the prices as they go. Buttons are kept in a massive box and you have to sort through to find a matching set. Zips are thrown in a corner, on the floor. It's seriously gross. BUT - you can find great vintage fabric, and if the brothers like you, it's cheap.

Roller Disco Party!

There was roller limbo, a revolving cast of dj's, a bbq spit and potent punch, courtesy of Lupita, who has the amazing gift of hiding high alcohol content with fruity flavours...

Latest Project...

I found this bedsheet in an op shop in the country. It originally had a massive horse head in the centre, but a really cute riding hat and crop print. I was able to salvage just enough to make this dress.

It's a combination of the colette patterns "Sencha" blouse and a Built By Wendy skirt pattern. With a pussy bow collar.

My hair was pretty rubbish after a day at work, so I hid it under this brown felt hat. Garth said I looked like an air hostess, so I wore my PanAm Junior Flyer wings too.

I quite like it.

Who Needs Deadstock Bullet Bras?

Art Melbourne 10!

Garth and I were lucky enough to score opening night tickets to Art Melbourne 10, courtesy of Miss Gemma Jones. She manages Outre Gallery, which showcases lowbrow,contemporary international pop, street, tiki, pop surrealism, modern folk, retro with a twist and underground art. Do yourself a favour, head over there now!

Basically the exhibition is a collection of galleries, each bringing their best works, under one roof. It really is worth a look, (although, I did spend most of my time at the Outre booth...I couldn't help it! Excellent friends and excellent art!)

Lots to see - if you're not in Melbourne, check out the Outre gallery shop - you can order their awesome stuff there. Three cheers for Outre and Art Melbourne!

Yesterday, the talented and amazing Miss Talor Browne hosted the Sunday Best Jumble Sale at Captains of Industry. There was helium balloons, fairy floss, bunting, cupcakes, beautiful girls and beautiful vintage. And a photobooth - pics coming soon!

This is the scene that greeted those who ventured around the corner into Sommerset Place... the lovely Ben and his roadster. And bunting! I wore a hat.

Swap Meet Score...

We got up extra early to drive the hour or so to the Castlemaine Swap Meet.
For those who've never been to one, a swap is basically an oval, or similar large space, filled with stalls selling anything from old sewing machines to deadstock 1920's car parts. You can always find a bargain, but you have to get there early!
Here's what I found:

A 50's Pan Am "Junior Flyer" badge, a 30's (?) carved bakelite brooch and an amazing knotted plastic cord brooch. I know there's a name for this style of jewellery - I think women made them during the war...does anyone know?

A vintage Capstan cigarettes tin. (Quick google search reveals this one to be from 1910!)

And this...

It's Miss Bernice Ayres' friendship book. She got it as a Christmas gift. In 1907.

As sure as the grass grows round the stump, you are my little sugar lump." Awww...

One more find, but it needs cleaning up before it makes an appearance here...soon!

Chewton Cemetery...

It's been a while since I've been to a good cemetery. One with old, old graves, tall trees and lots of shade. Garth and I went to the Castlemaine Swap Meet today - photos soon to come - and on the way home, we stopped at the Chewton Cemetery...(warning - image heavy!)I wore my new coat. It was freezing!

Yesterday, I met this little girl at the laundromat. She asked if she could keep the cardboard box that my recent ebay purchase (pics soon) arrived in. I said yes, so she wore it around on her head. When I pointed out to her that it looked like the box had a face, she said "It's a silly face. He has no nose." I thought it was cool anyway.

In other news, we found this on the side of the road. Welcome home, old cabinet!

They are from Topshop, which is the last place I thought I'd ever buy something from (besides maybe Hot Topic), but I saw them on an English backpacker here and asked her where she bought them. She said Topshop, and directed me to their online store. In 6-8 working days, they will be mine. Hurrah!

I've been meaning to post these for ages, so here they are. It seems that Janet Wanger (unfortunate surname alert!) wrote to the stars asking for their pictures. These are what she received in reply. The post marks indicate that the were sent between November 14th, 1950 and April 11th, 1952.

The Pants Dance...

You may have noticed that I never wear pants. EVER. That is, until I found (and won) three pairs of deadstock 40's slacks on ebay.

They're wool garbadine, which makes them a bit itchy, but you can't have it all! They fit me better than any other modern styles I've tried - but I'm still wary. I'm not used to seeing myself in trousers. What do you think? Should these pants go public?

I also picked up these sweet blouses for a song - more photos later!

Coffee and Pie, Oh My!

Garth and I were lucky enough to score an invite to “Pie Night,” an annual event held by our buddy Ben, at his hot rod shop, Rancho Deluxe.

I made key lime pie, and Garth made an apple pie. (See explanatory nerd symbols atop said pie.)

In attendance were the fabulous Talor and her fellow Kris, Ben and his lady Anita, her friend Gemma, and us. The first rule of pie night is “Don’t talk about Pie Night” so you never know what pies people will bring. We ended up with a stunning beef and guiness (Ben) a chicken and leek (Talor/Kris) and an amazing sweet potato and poppyseed (Gemma.)

Apple was the fruit of choice, with 3 variations on the theme and my lime effort. So much pie!

Ben’s place is amazing. He lives out the back of his warehouse/cafe and has a great eye for cool old automotive paraphernalia. And look at his table! He made it out of old school gymnasium flooring. Way cool. Thanks Ben. I wore my 30’s horse dress. Look! Little horses! And check out Talor’s awesome dress – a sweet little peach number. Nice.

Cold Feet...

So I'm from Queensland, where at this time of the year, people are wearing shorts and singlets. However, I now live in Melbourne, where it gets COLD!

My question is: How do you girls from cooler climates still wear your vintage best when it's freezing?

Garth and I went out last night and I wore a trenchcoat over my dress and my deadstock nylon stockings, but my legs still got cold! I see lots of girls wearing black tights under their dresses, and while it looks good, I prefer a more traditional "colourless" leg look. Are there some amazingly thick flesh coloured tights that I don't know about? Do tell!

The "Lordleigh" Dress...

Making it's first blog appearance is this "Original Lordleigh California" dress. Do excuse the odd, sad looking pose - I only had a few seconds and had to prop my camera up in the kitchen on the stove to take the photos and they all came out blurry except this one!

First Autumn Dress...

This dress still needs a few alterations, but I just felt like wearing it to work today...

It sort of fits the weather we're having now - rainy and getting cooler during the day.
As you can see, it's a big saggy around the neck, but a few darts should fix that. I returned the M.A.C. Brave Red lipstick in favour of my staple, Chilli. At least I tried something different, right?

And look - I added "tabs" at the top of the blog - anyone know how to make them all cool and customised? I want to hand draw the page titles to make them stand out a bit more...
