Offshore Radio Theatre + Hair Tutorial (of sorts)

Last night we went to the 2nd Offshore Radio Theatre at The Kelvin Club. I did my hair and wore a 60's lace cocktail dress. (And a fur wrap - it was cold!)

Curl your hair in sections towards your face. I did a side part.

Leave for as long as possible and gently unroll the curls.

Comb them with your fingers.

Roll your fringe section and pin. Ta-da.

Earthquakes, Aftershocks and New Hair...

Hi! I'm in New Zealand. Queenstown, to be more accurate. We flew over here to meet up with Garth's parents for their 30th wedding anniversary. The day before we left, Christchurch (the town we were flying into) was struck by a 7.4 earthquake. Awesome. But, we made it. See? (click to zoom...)

There's a really pretty walk that we do each time we go, along the lake into town.




Queenstown is a total bust when it comes to vintage/thrifting adventures, but I did find this nice skirt for $5 in an op shop in Dunedin.
And my Cheap Monday sunnies arrived in the mail just before we left. Excellent!


For fancy, I packed this dress. The long sleeves make it nice and warm. It's a Berkshire "In Between Size Casual" from the late 50's.

I attempted something different with my hair...
Which I think looked okay.

Who Wants/Needs Deadstock 1930's Curlers?

So, I came across this box.




It said this:



I opened it and saw:



Ariel Hair Curlers!



In perfect condition!



With Instructions!



There's 12 dozen (that's 144 cards) in here. I only have so much hair. Would anyone like to buy some? I've looked around and it seems that similar items sell for between $8.95 and $18 per card. How does $7 per card sound? (There are 3 curlers per card.) Email me at karleeslater@optusnet.com.au if you'd like some...Of course, I'll post anywhere in the world.

Winter Hair and Rescued Hats...

I've been so busy lately and I need to keep my hair out of my face at work, so I've been experimenting with ways to wear my hair up. This is pretty much my go-to style at the moment...



In other news...HATS!



A friend told me she'd seen a pile of old hats crushed in a suitcase at the op shop. I went to check it out and ended up bringing them all home.




I'm slowly steaming and reshaping them. I'll see which suit me and maybe put the rest up for sale here. They're all felt and from the fifties. Score!

Hair Inspiration...

So, I basically already have this cut, but I want to practice setting it like this!

Setting Pattern...

As requested, here is the (poorly drawn) setting pattern that I use to set my hair.



It's pretty simple, just work slowly, in rows of alternating direction from one side to the other. Leave the crown section alone, otherwise it'll get all poofy. Wet each section before you roll it. Sleep on it (with a scarf on) and brush out in the moring. Pin back the sides, and you're good to go!

Getting the Hang of it - Pincurls on Shorter Hair...

You know when you get a haircut and your hair kind of freaks out? And it takes a few days to deal with the fact that there's less of itself? I've officially passed that point.



It takes me 10 minutes to do this set - a bit more if I'm reading at the same time. Speaking of which...I want the next Lula to be here now.

New Town, New Haircut...

Outfit Details:
Dress: Vintage, found in Warwick.
Cardigan: Cotton On, shortened by me.
Lipstick: Revlon Really Red.
Haircut: Garth.



Well, I wouldn’t say Garth was a master barber at any stretch of the imagination, but I don’t mind this new haircut. He followed the diagram pretty much to the letter, and I think it looks quite like the wartime standard cuts of the 40’s – above the collar, side part, etc. It’s just too short to put up now though, which means I’ll have to pincurl it every second night. I suppose that just means I’ll get much faster at it! Maybe I’m imagining it, but I think it sort of looks like these girls..?


We decided to go for a walk yesterday from our house to Chapel Street for a $4 pizza at the Lucky Coq (a bar.) It was a nice walk – it doesn’t get dark her until after 8pm, so there was plenty of time.



The route we took also has a good variety of Laundromats.




I can’t describe what I like about them so much. Maybe it’s the fact that wherever you are in the world, they all look the same? It’s strangely comforting. Or something.
