Dress via Bedsheet..

It was a rainy day yesterday and I got bored.
I had this old sheet lying around and hadn't ever used it - I bought it from an op shop a year or so ago for the print.
So I decided to make up a dress.

I just used an easy pattern that I've made before, and it took about an hour.

It looked a bit plain, so I decided to add a peter pan collar and a bow.
Ta Da!

It might gross some of you out, but old bedsheets are a great (and cheap) source of vintage style fabric. They're usually nice and soft too. Just wash them before use!

  1. That's a great idea. My mum used one to make a skirt for a costume, once. It makes me think of Gone With the Wind or Sound of Music (they make dresses out of curtains, though).

  3. I do that one quite a lot, for good fabric I make dresses, shirts and skirts out of and for ones with bad patterns or a little worn I use them to test patterns instead of paying for muslin, its cheaper and you are recycling.

  4. Anyone can sew, no one taught me! honestly, just buy a cheap machine and give it a go. If it sucks, sell the machine on ebay!

  6. I think it looks gorgeous! I have not had much luck with finding bedsheets I can make a dress from, but I do keep my eyes open - like you say, they are a great source of vintage-style fabrics.

  7. I have bought a set of Dinosaur bed sheets from an opshop intending to do the same but I just can't seem to find the right pattern for it so it has been sitting under my desk at uni for months. This really inspires me to get a move on and make something fun!
I love the dress; the Peter Pan collar is just too cute for words. P.S. Did you mount your fabric first?

  8. Zombie - what is "mounting"? (that's a no..)
I actually made a dress out of a 80's "BMX Bandits" sheet once. It was a hit with the guys!
